Philadelphia area food. Yum.

February 23, 2008

Philly has it made. Really.

Noticed something while writing up Szechuan Hill's review...Philly and its suburbs have it made compared to at least 90% of the country. Imagine if your only choices for Chinese were the wok place at the mall and P.F. Chang's. Or if your pizza choices were limited to Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Little Caesar's and Domino's. Ugh. That said, I'm sure some chains won't come here (or back here) simply because the Philly market is over-saturated.

So enjoy.

Szechuan Hill, Drexel Hill, PA

A repeat visit for X-man and the wife. On the table last night:
Steamed Dumplings
Hot Noodles with Szechuan Sauce
Moo Goo Gai Pan
Walnut Shrimp
Bean Curd w/Brown Sauce

The dumplings went quickly. I heard from a former coworker that the dumplings are made in-house.

I ordered the Moo goo to have a non-spicy dish to balance things out, and also because of the chicken. One test of a Chinese restaurant is to see if they can screw simple things up like this dish. Szechuan Hill didn't.

The Walnut Shrimp was quite tasty and came with a swirled carrot garnish, with cherry on top. The wife raved about the bean curd sauce.

Total damage: About $40.00 before tax.

Verdict: One of our faves...we don't do sit-down Chinese often, but when we do, this is worth the short trip out of town.

Dairy Queen: Mushroom Swiss Burger

Dairy Queen has a most excellent Mushroom Swiss burger. It's relatively cheap, loaded with bad fats and sodium, and tastes great when it leaks onto otherwise pedestrian fries. Available at participating Dairy Queens with Brazier grills. Ran into this in two locations: Middletown, DE and Bear, DE.
